What is transitional work programming?
A Transitional Work Program (TWP) is designed to facilitate an early return to work by temporarily assigning job duties that are within the physical capabilities of the injured worker. The program uses real job tasks to accommodate the injured worker’s restrictions and gradually returns the injured worker to their original job. Transitional Work Programs have been proven to control the costs of workers’ compensation for employers, including the indirect costs associated with replacement workers, lost productivity, and legal consultation. Injured workers who participate in transitional work benefit with a smooth transition back to full duty and most will have a faster recovery time.
A company’s transitional work program is developed before an injury occurs and includes the procedures that should be followed if an employee is injured on the job. Employers will establish relationships with medical providers who treat occupational injuries and complete job analysis, identifying the functional requirements of each job position.
